Hanne Adam aka adamned.age is a well-known figure in the netlabel scene, and has been extremely kind to offer us her work for several years now. “After the rain” is her new album – the second release at PublicSpaces Lab.

Personally, I have been following her work for a couple of years now, and what it strikes the most is the care and passion she puts on each and every release she makes. Which is the same to say, you can’t miss this one. The other aspect I find interesting is that though she maintains her line of work tight (you can almost know if adamned.age is playing in your player), through the course of the years the production of her music as become more and more velvety and soft, which isn’t to say that it has become boring, on the contrary. The dynamics inside each music, the glitches, beats, and other synths all work together unified and are extremely appealing.

Trip-hop or whatever you want to call adamned.age slow beat music filled with smoke and glitches is a landmark in the netlabel scene. “After the rain” continues her path, surprisingly, in a much brighter and almost joyful way (like indicating that after the rain comes the good weather). After the rain is an album focused on rhythm, and listening to the several tracks you find Hanne exploring and highlighting several different styles.

After the first 3 tracks where rhythm points the way, she presents us with what could be considered a glitchy music box song, to offer us a beautiful jazz tune in storiette for reflection, and finishing off with the title track After the rain, an epilogue, or maybe a prologue for a next release.

Enjoy another fine Adamned.age release, as it surely is another great addition to her work.

James Lowery presents us with (yet another) introspective and fascinating experimental sonic work. The two tracks that are a part of this new release are the soundtrack to a story that has a beginning and an end, leaving to our imagination what the middle of this strange, but beautiful story, might sound/look like.

Release Details

When Jon Sykes aka Made By Robot first approached us with his idea to make a compilation based around “Number Stations” we thought that the idea was interesting and that we would sure give it a listen when he had rounded up the material. When we released “Number Stations” we knew we had an amazing compilation in our hands that united a lot of talent under just one release. For the sequel we expected nothing less but still, “Number Stations part II” managed to surprise us on all levels. This is a compilation that gathers talent, taste and some surprises coming from names we already know and from names we will start following with more attention now that we have listened to their work. We hope you do the same.

For all the information relating the artists in this release don’t forget to download the booklet [PDF format]

The PublicSpaces Lab team would like to thank Jon Sykes for his work in putting this compilation together.

Release Details

And then spring came

And it was Sunday morning

And a feeling of laziness invaded the air

As though a moment in time quiet

With birds singing and waves crashing by

Welcome stillness

Slowly building a stream of glitches and low and high pitches

Cinchel in his “paginated overflow” ep builds a lazy album where each sound being added takes its time to be introduced and then claim is presence with sharpness. Pads, strings and glitches come and go in harmony but if you listen closely a controlled chaotic conversation between the elements can be identified, much like birds dialoguing. Paginated Overflow by Cinchel, is the latest addition to PublicSpaces Lab’s releases. Enjoy the welcoming of spring.

Leonardo Rosado

About Cinchel, in his own words:

“I am a Chicago based musician working with guitar, effects and laptop to create abstract ambient music that is both minimal and dense. My main focus has been the interaction of sounds/notes with themselves. When I began playing guitar at the age of 17 I practiced this idea using solo guitar and a simple delay, influenced by the guitar playing of The Edge (from U2). After a few years I was finally able to afford a simple 4-track and I began exploring the effect of layering guitars and adjusting the tape speed to produce interference and dissonance. It was at this point I started listening to the music of Glen Branca and Rhys Chatham and could hear the beauty that was an ensemble of guitars, where the whole ensemble was a large instrument that stopped sounding like a guitar. With only the use of delay, layering and distortion I attempt to make a lot of guitars no longer sound like guitars. I have avoided the use of MIDI patches/samples and advanced software like Max/MSP mostly because I would rather spend my time playing guitar than learning to program. I like to call this minimal dense music for that reason.”

Release Details

Usually we feel really far away from the world we are living in. We are born in cultural constructs. We are programmed, created by our own system and manipulated, but at the same time we program, create and manipulate. We love, breath, suffer. Consciously or not, we are watching how the world dies while we are trying to create new ones.

The human being is eternally struggling to find a place in a self made world, which is just the mirage of the strange and tries to reconcile this world with a non-existent ideal human soul by looking for the own identity in everything we do.

There is a world inside and another outside us. It’s the collective lost of humanity and the arising of a strong destructive but also wonderful individualism. The world is strange, because we are strangers ourselves. We don’t need to be honest; we don’t even need to think about that. We have TV, cars, music, art, money, wars, walls, video games, underground, plains, weapons, telephone, internet… (Do we really communicate actually?). We are great. We created an alien universe, which is not our home anymore, but which is as diverse as us, as our art, as our music. The classical music tried to find the perfection, the baroque showed the contrasts, flamenco, blues, jazz…let the heart speak free. Between lots of influences, objects and realities, we’d like to find our home and ourselves. Is this world my home?

This World is not my Home was composed and recorded in Berlin (2008-2009). The spine of the album was composed as part of an interactive sound installation that Alpen Butter created for the international art exhibition “This world is not my home” (Kunsthaus Tacheles, September ’08, Berlin).

About Alpen Butter

Alpen Butter tries to overcome extreme or dualistic points of view by putting together digital and analog elements, technology and traditional techniques, human being and computer. All kind of electronic sounds are fused with classical, traditional, modern and contemporary music to create a sound which represents a positive side of a globalizing idea and a natural conception of modern, multicultural (actually multi-everything) life, including also the negative elements. Alpen Butter‘s sound is been sometimes associated with visual art, attempting to establish an audiovisual union between sound and visual art. We work together with visual artists, creating soundtracks for any type of visual art such as paintings, illustrations and experimental video.

Release Details

There is a fascination about mysterious places, about dark corners that we dare not enter. This fascination arises from what we imagine, the stories that are fed by the unknown.

From Ruin to Bliss is a sound script for such stories: Abandoned places, filled with stories to tell; dry and unchangeable places.
James Lowery aka Swaying Smoke masters the use of dissonances and drones to potentiate this mood; this awkward feeling of unknown territory: we are drawn into it, slowly but unstoppably. From Ruin to Bliss starts building this universe, where we feel trapped, ever descending into a sense of unease and always looking for a way out.
As time passes by, we get to the conclusion that the universe built by James won’t ever change ever, and we will be lost in these ruins, forever blissful and enchanted by its secrets. And that’s when it changes, or we think it changes.

From Ruin to Bliss, is a marvelous musical piece that stretches from James Lowery imagination into the corridors of our dreams, like an architect that describes, with sound, cathedrals, long halls, castles or abandoned factories.

| Release Details |

“We have rarely experienced here at the Lab the build up of expectation behind a release like we felt for this one. “Beats for the Subverted” was one of the releases that reached out from our usual listening base and brought other listeners to the Lab. Right after [PS012] was released we started to get asked, by mail, in talks or on twitter when the next release from Paul Croker would see the light of day. That moment has arrived and the wait was well worth it. Dustmotes delivers with his “Containment Sessions” a release that is a few notches above “Beats for the Subverted”. When listening to it for the first time I could feel a sound that is more confident and, but I might be wrong, I think that has a lot to do with all the positive feedback Paul got from his first ever release. Nothing in “The Containment Sessions” is out of place and the same attention to detail that Paul got us used to, is here. I feel privileged for being one of the few that got to enjoy this release before everyone else and it is my opinion that we all should be grateful to Paul for sharing his immense talent with us.”

Alex Mendez, Barcelona, April 18th 2010

“Primitive, raw and beautifully crafted. A collage – components collected and mounted with complete respect for their musical heritage on a cave wall (solid, dependable rhythms chipped, cracked and twisted into something new). More pretentious feedback you won’t have read for some time, but I want to convey something of what your music speaks (to me)!”
